Walking through the massive “Volcano Gateway”, visitors are transported to a world where the dinosaurs live and breathe once more! This impressive theatrical element is covered with glowing streams of lava and the (optional) occasional eruption of smoke that wafts upward past a life-reconstruction of a pterosaur soaring overhead.

Glowing plinths of crystal rise from rocks and boulders and introduce visitors to the educational topics covered by the exhibition and the iconic system that ties the physical and virtual components of the exhibit together. The colorful icon system provides visitors a simple way to classify information and “carry it with them” from physical to virtual aspects of Be the Dinosaur™ in order to follow their own interests and curiosity. Fossil displays and interactive kiosks take us deeper into the study of ecosystems and how they affect animal behavior and illuminate “how we know what we know”.

The “Be the Dinosaur™” simulation has been designed with traffic flow in-mind. The integral relationship between the virtual experience and the physical exhibit creates a dynamic where visitors explore informational signs and touch screen elements, apply their new knowledge in the simulation, and are then referred back to specific resources for further exploration. This cyclical learning process is reinforced at the end of each round in the simulation, where a wrap up screen suggests content where further exploration is warranted. This makes it very clear when one individual’s turn has ended and another’s is about to begin. Our previous hosts have reported no problems with visitor flow, queuing, or other traffic flow issues.

Special elements and control options accommodate the youngest visitors and any, or all, of the Be the Dinosaur™ simulator pods can be easily converted into wheelchair accessible versions.
